New figures from the AA shows a sharp rise in the amount of cash being collected from drivers in speeding fines - amounting to an eye-watering £600,000 per day

Drivers pay £600,000 a day in speeding camera fines.

The figures have rocketed by 40% in the last 10 years, research reveals.

Now the AA wants more police to make roads safer - not extra cameras regarded as a Government money-spinner.

About 2.6 million tickets at a minimum £100 fine a time were issued in 2019, the last year on record.

The £260m rake-in was up almost £75 million on 2011. The last nine years saw £1.9billion netted by cameras which now number 3,224 according to Freedom of Information requests to 45 police forces by insurers Tempcover.

The cash goes to the Treasury and is given out to councils, police forces and other government departments.

The AA's Jack Cousens said: "Speed cameras serve a purpose, but more coppers on roads is what makes them safer – stopping speeders, drunk drivers, people on mobiles.

"Speed cameras can't do that and many motorists will think these huge numbers are just a cash cow for the Government."

The South East had the highest camera fines since 2011 with 1,022 fixed penalty notices a day.

The North West was second on 882 with East of England third at 838. Bottom of the table is Northern Ireland with 21 a day

The Department for Transport said: "Speed cameras perform an essential role in making roads safer."

Temporary insurance firm Tempcover submitted the Freedom of Information Requests to all 45 UK police forces.
